Facial wrinkles are caused primarily by habitual facial movements and expressions, such as smiling, frowning or squinting. Therefore, as skin ages, it loses its flexibility due to the breaking down of our skin’s connective tissue and wrinkles will form in the areas of the face that we use the most. However, permanent features like "Marionette lines", "worry lines" and "think folds" may not always correspond with our inner emotion.
By applying botulinum toxin the muscles that control facial expressions are weakened or become temporarily inactive which causes the skin to relax and wrinkles to disappear again and in case of very deep wrinkles to soften. It prevents muscles from receiving nerve stimulation. In neurology and ophthalmology this substance has been used for over 20 years for spasm and nerve disorders or for the treatment of migraine headaches. Thus, there are studies of long-term effects and consequences available.
Botox is highly diluted and a minimum dose is injected into the weakened/affected muscle. With proper use, side-effects do not occur. It is applied for reduction of eye and forehead wrinkles, frown lines and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). It is also used for slight nasolabial folds, chin and décolleté rejuvenation and excessive gingival display on smiling (gummy smile). It takes 4-6 days to take full effect and lasts for about 4-6 months.
The following Botulinum Toxin products are registered in Germany: Botox®, Vistabel®, Dysport®, Azzalure®, Xeomin®, Bocouture®.
